We were asked to investigate why this property was getting damp and to produce a report with a waterproofing design, costings and a long term guarantee.
The property has a cementitious tanking installed and the rear wall of the property is constructed of stone and is earth retaining which is 1.6 meters above internal solid floor level, damp patches were noted and water was visible at the floor and wall joint.
The previous contractor didn’t tank the floor which is why the water was ingressing at the floor and wall joint, the tanking was also applied poorly on the wall which is why it has failed.
The below picture shows how high the ground level is on the earth retaining wall.
Water was entering the floor and wall joint, see picture below.
We installed the Newton system 500 to the earth retaining wall, and a basedrain into the floor to collect ingressing water and discharge to external gravity drainage, this system is fully maintainable and as you can see we installed rodding/jetting eyes.
Why Newton System 500 as A Tanking Alternative
- No messy and costly substrate preparation works
- Is deemed reversible so can be removed in the future if requested requirement for treating listed buildings
- Can be installed in all weather conditions.
- Can be installed with no wet trades meaning no drying out times
- Can be tested to see if it is working once installed – no other system can be
- Is easily repairable should the membrane be damaged by other trades
- Meets the requirements of BS 8102:2009 waterproofing regulations
Newton 508 is a high quality cavity drain waterproofing membrane suitable for use internally below the ground to retaining walls, vaulted soffits and floors. Newton 508 is the most commonly used membrane within the Newton System 500 waterproofing system that includes Newton drainage and pumping systems.
Newton 508 is guaranteed against deterioration for 30 years, and has a life expectancy of at least 50 years (DIN 9001:2000) and is supported by BBA Certification Number 94/3010.
Newton 508 is inert with high compressive loading stability. It is highly resistant to water, alkalies, saline solutions and organic acids, and it is not effected by minerals and hydro-carbons. It is also impervious to root penetration, is rot-proof and resistant to bacteria, fungi and other small organisms.
Newton 508 is also independently tested as being an effective barrier to methane and radon ground gasses and is the membrane used within our patented combined ground gas and waterproofing system, Newton PAC.
- Does not require extensive and damaging preparation to the wall surface.
- Speed of installation.
- Provides vapour control and when used with humidity control systems is capable of delivering an environment to all levels within a Grade 3 environment to BS8102:2009
- Independently certified as a barrier to hydro-carbon gasses, radon and methane.

The below drawing shows our design of the waterproofing system
The professional’s “basement waterproofing system of choice”, Newton System 500 is an internally applied basement waterproofing system based upon a range of cavity drain membranes, drainage conduits and sophisticated pumping and control systems.
Unlike conventional ’tanking’, Newton System 500 is not attempting the almost impossible and trying to hold water back, but places designed maintainable depressurisation voids at known weaknesses in the structure so that ingressing water is simply captured and diverted out of the property.
Walls were dry lined with a thermal plasterboard and plastered.
The picture below shows the floors were covered with Newton Nuseal-lm which is a single component, high performance, elastomeric liquid rubber membrane (the best liquid membrane we have ever used)
The 2 pictures below show the 63mm pipe connected to external drainage
The beauty of the Newton system 500 is it can be tested before final floor finishes are installed so you can be sure of a perfect installation.
